Bulbbul has been originally launched in November 2018 as being one of nine new Indian original films, along with the Delhi-based police drama Soni, Priyanka Chopra-produced Firebrand, Madhuri Dixit-produced 15 August, Abhay Deol, Mithila Palkar-starrer Chopsticks, Manav Kaul-led Music Teacher, the Bengaluru start-up bromance Upstarts. Bulbbul was only one of two films — alongside Sachin Kundalkar that is yet to be released from Netflix India’s 2018.

In its declaration, Bulbbul is described as a “period piece set in a pleasant climate in the midst of age-old beliefs and superstitions. Satya and his brother’s daughter-in-law, Bulbbul, were inseparable till he was sent to England for education. Upon his return, Bulbul finds himself deserted by his uncle and now lives a solitary life as an elusive lady-of-the-palace, committed to the needs of the community. But their ancestral village is plagued by unsolved murders and haunting stories of a woman living in the trees. Satya must discover the answer behind the lure and save his village from the evil ‘chudail with the inverted legs’.

Netflix’s launch date for Bulbbul arrives with an extra synopsis, calling it a “mystery” that deal with the “Indian fable in 20th-century Bengal.” Bulbbul “traverses the path of a teenage girl from simplicity to power, as the legend of a chudail casts a dark shadow over her life.”
